How to Use Facebook Custom Audience to Increase Sales on Your Amazon Affiliate Websites

If you do not know, I have over 50 websites that promote different Amazon products as an affiliate. With recent updates from Google it is becoming harder and harder to get posts on my Amazon affiliate websites to get ranked highly in Google. To combat this I started using a tool provided by Facebook to increase my sales on my Amazon Affiliate websites.

Facebook allows you to put a pixel on your website that tracks visitors to your website. Facebook will then associate a website visitor with that person’s Facebook profile. Once you have collected enough visitors to your website from the pixel then you can start advertising to these visitors on Facebook.

Introducing Facebook Custom Audiences

Facebook’s Custom Audience feature allows you to create ads that target people that have visited your website.

Why would you be interested in Facebook Custom Audience? Let me give you an example if you have an Amazon affiliate website.

For example you have a website that promotes air compressors as an Amazon affiliate. You can put a simple code on your website. This code will collect data on all visitors to your website.

People visiting your website are people that are interested in purchasing an air compressor. You can then run a Facebook ad promoting air compressors to people that have visited your website.

Value of Facebook Custom Audiences

Everyone will tell you that you need to create highly targeted ads on Facebook. The problem is that sometimes you end up targeting a broad range of customers that are not interested in your ad.

Facebook Custom Audiences allows you to overcome this limitation.

People who are looking for the latest Paleo breakfast recipes will not be visiting your website. People who are interested in air compressors will visit your website. If somebody is visiting your website then they are highly targeted which is what you want when running a Facebook ad.

Facebook Custom Audience Options

When you create a custom audience in Facebook you will have several options:

  • Anyone who visits your website
  • People who visit specific web pages
  • Peple visiting specific web pages but not others
  • People who have not visited in a certain amount of time
  • Custom combination

The most common option is to target anyone who visits your website.

Facebook allows you to specify a date range of how long someone remains in the custom audience after they visit your website. People will be removed from your custom audience after the set time period unless they visit your website again. The default value is 30 days and the maximum time is 180 days.

Once you’ve created a Custom Audience, all those contacts will stay together as a single group or target audience. You can then run Facebook ads to your custom audience.

Creating Custom Audience

Facebook allows you to create a custom audience from either Ads Manager or Power Editor. You can create up to 200 custom audiences.

You can click on the button below to get my free “Custom Audience Guidebook” that shows you the exact steps to creating custom audiences.

Installing the Pixel

When you create your custom audience you will be given code for your retargeting pixel. This code will need to be installed on your website.

The retargeting pixel is how Facebook tracks the users to your website.

Normally the retargeting pixel is installed in the head script on your website. If you have configured your custom audience to only target certain pages on your website then you will need to install the targeting pixel only on the pages you selected to target.

It will take around four hours for Facebook to start tracking visitors to your website. Facebook will not let you target your custom audience until Facebook has built a custom audience of at least 1,000 visitors.

Facebook Ads for Custom Audiences

When you create an ad to target your custom audience all you have to do is to select your audience in the custom audience section.

ON the Audience tab you just need to select your custom audience for targeting. You can also select to exclude a custom audience in your ad if you want.

Once you have selected your custom audience you can drill down further by selecting age range, sex and interests. This is not required but it allows you to segment your custom audience for an ad.

I have installed the tracking pixel on my Amazon affiliate websites. I then create custom Facebook Ads to target this custom audience. I have found my click-thru rate and thus my profitability from these ads are much greater than my general targeting ads.

You can click on the button below to get my free “Custom Audience Guidebook” that shows you the exact steps to creating custom audiences.

  1. Hi Jennifer,

Very good post.As in the start you wroter “If you do not know, I have over 50 websites that promote different Amazon products as an affiliate. With recent updates from Google it is becoming harder and harder to get posts on my Amazon affiliate websites to get ranked highly in Google.”
My question is that for someone like me who want to promote amazon products and has no so many running websites in fact just started then how can i make use of this plugin because there will be almost no traffic on site or sites i will make to promote products.
Secondly can i promote multiple products through one site and if so then can you share your expert opinion how to proceed.I am in Personal Development Niche.

    1. Jhonty,

Some of my amazon affiliate websites get only about 3-10 visitors per day so they get very little traffic. With the facebook tracking pixel you will need at least 1,000 visitors for facebook to create the audience for you to advertise to. If you do not have the traffic yet then you will not be able to advertise to them.

  2. Hi Jennifer,
thanks for this useful article and the guide.
Had a few difficulties to find the admanager in FB, but then easily instlled the remarketing ixel on one of my page . Yes, only one page and not the full site as I want to target the ads to a certain product range.

The next step, which you didn’t describe, is using lookalike audiences.
Would be a good topic for a casestudy or free guide 😉

    1. Tom,

You are one step ahead of me. I am just mastering the audience part and just now starting on learning about lookalike audiences. So don’t have enough experience with that to talk about it at this moment. But soon I will 🙂
